So This Is What It's Come To...

Today I will endure the toughest and most scrutinizing  interview for a job. The employer is going to be as selective as Stanford, Harvard and Yale in their acceptance rate. What is this job you ask? Some coveted intern position at a law firm? A minor role in a major motion picture?

No.

Instead I will be fighting for a job as a cashier at a Target store for a pathetic $8/hour. Also known as California State's minimum wage. It's understandable though. With so many people unemployed, potential employer's inboxes are filled to the brim with people vying for a job. Any job. The other problem is that the usual hiring-pool for such a job would normally be composed of high school students, high school dropouts and the other usual suspects who look for low-end work. Unfortunately, people with Bachelors, Masters and Doctorate degrees have joined the menial-job market. As can be seen in this video about the "99ers" (people who have used up all 99 weeks of unemployment benefits and remain unemployed), even these people with advanced degrees are forced to stoop so low in an effort to find any source of income.

Much like the people in the video, I am ready to accept any job that comes at me. I really hate that I am forced to be nostalgic for the days when I was making $10 an hour...over a decade ago and in high school.

  1. Best of luck to you! There is no shame in honest work! Big oil CEOs are the ones that should feel ashamed.

Please share about Myfreecams in the future, I've never heard of it before.

  5. Good luck. I applied at a local Macy's for $9 an hour, and they poo-poo'd me because I didn't have a Bachelor's degree.

Really? I need a degree to fold clothes and work a cash register? You'd think a degree would get me more than $9 an hour....

    Fuck the system.
